Zero Copy Strategies for Distributed CORBA
Objects in Clusters of PCs
2003, 240 Seiten/pages, € 64,00. ISBN 3-89649-830-4

Clusters of Personal Computers offer the best compute performance at the lowest price and 'Gigabit networking to the Desktop' enables a new game of multimedia applications that benefit from higher communication bandwidth. In order to reach the full Gigabit/s speed on standard PCs with their typically weak memory subsystems either additional hardware for protocol processing or alternatively a highly efficient software system that circumvents data copies is required.
This thesis successfully introduces speculation techniques into system software design and presents an implementation of a clean zero-copy solution entirely in software that runs with all commodity Gigabit Ethernet NICs and all common programming interfaces. Since the zero-copy principle, where applicable, must be rigidly used in all levels of software, the zero-copy design is extended from low level drivers and protocol stacks to distributed object middleware like CORBA. The resulting software system is highly efficient and eases the development of distributed applications significantly.
