This book deals with the realization and
application of two examples of integrated optical reflectors in InP that rely
on vertically plasma etched facets: corner mirrors and grating demultiplexers.
Covering all relevant aspects, rules for an optimized design of corner mirrors
are derived and the fabrication of corner mirrors with losses of 0.3 dB is
presented. The realization of grating demultiplexers that are well suited for
applications in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission systems is addressed.
Encountered problems as polarization sensitivity, absolute passband wavelength
control, resolution, aberrations, efficiency and packaging are considered. A
comprehensive overview over the principles of plasma etching is given with
particular emphasis on the influence of parameters in order to achieve smooth
vertical facets.
