In recent years, 3D models and animations have become ubiquitous
in entertainment, media, science, architecture and art. 3D content is
designed, modeled and animated by thousands of people every day, and yet 3D
content generation is still a cost- and labor-intensive endeavor. This book
presents a novel 3D scanning device, together with two modeling and animation
tools that considerably ease the acquisition process of real-world objects.
The 3D sensor consists of a real-time structured light scanner that delivers
accurate and dense 3D data with texture at 30 frames per second without posing
restrictions on the motion or rigidity of the object. Robust registration
algorithms are applied to the real-time 3D data via an in-hand modeling tool
where the user can scan objects simply by turning the objects in front of the
3D sensor, and thus making object acquisition a matter of a few seconds instead
of hours. Non-rigid scan registration algorithms are developed for a live
facial puppetry system that allows an actor to control an arbitrary face in
real-time by acting in front of the 3D sensor. The facial expressions are
tracked online and transferred directly onto a puppet, and therefore facial
animations can easily be mass-produced.
About the author:
Thibaut Weise obtained his M. Eng. Computing degree from Imperial College London in
2005. From 2005 to 2009, he was research assistant and Ph.D. student at
the Computer Vision Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
(ETH), Zurich, Switzerland, with Prof. Luc Van Gool. He received his Ph.D. in
Computer Science (Dr. sc. ETH Zurich) from ETH Zurich for his work on real-time
3D scanning, modeling and animation.
