This thesis deals with the development of a commercial multi-dimensional simulation software for quantum well edge emitting laser diodes. Numerically robust methods have been applied in order to obtain reliable and fast results. Both external laser characteristics such as the static light-power vs. current, optical mode gain or transient behavior and internal microscopic properties are studied in order to analyze the device physics and optimize the device features. The models are suitable for all types of Fabry Perot devices (bulk, single-, multiquantum well, ridge or embedded waveguides). The laser simulation software has been realized on the footing of DESSIS_ISE, a commercial circuit and device simulator. This enables the use of the entire modelling, visualization and simulation capabilities of the ISE TCAD Suite.
